Country overview Ethnic groups (in 2022) included Andorran (48.3 per cent), Spanish (24.8 per cent), followed by Portuguese (11.2 per cent) and French (4.5 per cent). The official language is Catalan, with French, Spanish and Portuguese also spoken.

Andorra is undoubtedly synonymous with nature: more than 90% of the country is made up of mountains, forests, rivers, lakes and meadows. Only about 4% of the territory has been built on, at the bottom of the valleys and at the feet of the more than 65 peaks that are over 6,560 feet high.

Andorra claims it is the last independent survivor of the Marca Hispanica, the buffer states created by Charlemagne to keep the Islamic Moors from advancing into Christian France. Tradition holds that Charlemagne granted a charter to the Andorran people in return for their fighting the Moors.
